Max Dearnley became Macc’s fifth, and arguably most crucial, summer signing yesterday. The 6ft 5 keeper spent last season at Buxton and Chorley in the National League North, having previously played for Farsley Celtic in the same division.
And in more good news, the Silkmen’s goalkeeping ranks were further strengthened by the arrival of Tom Scott who will compete with Dearnley for the no.1 jersey. Ex Man City academy graduate Scott has had spells at FC Halifax and Bradford Park Avenue.
But for now, let’s turn the spotlight on Dearnley and assess the views of Chorley, Buxton and Farsley fans on the giant shot-stopper who Macc reportedly beat off interest from Gateshead and League 2 sides to seal his signature.
Chorley fans’ views on Max Dearnley
“Assuming we can’t get him in as an understudy to (Matt) Urwin, Max Dearnley was great for us covering his injury. Certainly looked solid and worthy of a regular start”
“No brainer, top keeper”, “What a player”, “Great signing” (reacting to the news that Chorley had extended Dearnley’s loan)
“He was genuinely superb” (commenting on Dearnley’s clean sheet against league leaders Tamworth
“We would have struggled with Tamworth’s long throws if Max Dearnley hadn’t commanded his area so well. Absolutely belting game, get him signed ASAP”
“Agreed. Get Max Dearnley signed up now and he deserves it 100%”
“This keeper is class. Quick to spot danger, commands his area well, good at coming to claim the ball when needed. Need to sign him on a permanent – if not the rest of this season, certainly for the next”
“Can anybody explain how we’ve actually managed to get Max Dearnley from Buxton, albeit on loan? I think he’s played over 20 games for them this season and is clearly a quality keeper. How on earth is he ‘spare’? How good must their other keeper be?”
“He had a tough time at Buxton, their fanbase was glad to see him go. Yesterday was his best game for us by a mile. Confidence goes a long way with keepers”
“What are you basing that on? Everything I've seen from Buxton fans has been overwhelmingly positive about him. Apart from when he came to us, when they were unhappy at him being loaned out. His record with them was excellent.”
“They signed Wolves u21 keeper (Joe Young) til the end of the season and immediately dropped Dearnley. Wolves lad has apparently done very well, including a cup penalty shootout and they've since pulled away from the drop zone.”
“He’s done a fantastic job since coming in”
Buxton fans’ views on Max Dearnley
“Oh dear, whilst we struggle, non-sensical”, “Crazy decision”, “Sack the board” on Buxton’s decision to loan Dearnley to Chorley
“Dropping a solid keeper like Max Dearnley went well didn’t it”
“Great keeper Max. The (Buxton) fans love him. Need a song now”
“Big gloves to fill? Could argue he’s starting to outgrow them. Brilliant keeper”
“He’s defo a keeper. Done us proud so far. Keep Max with us please”
“Fantastic keeper”
“Some keeper you are Max Dearnley. That penalty save was incredible – couldn’t write it”
Farsley fans’ views on Max Dearnley
“How good was Max Dearnley today by the way?”
“Great keeper. An absolutely top class goalie. A great signing who has had an outstanding season”
“Superb all season. A massive part of our survival”
“From someone who watched a lot of Max last season, this is a fantastic signing for Chorley”
“Was excellent at Farsley last year”
League 2 fans on Dearnley being linked with Morecambe, Harrogate Town and Walsall
“Kind of keeper we should be looking at”
“The kind of keeper we need”
“25-year old good age. Slight concern for me is that he has less than 100 apps, so is that down to injury, or has he mainly been a No2 where he's been playing?”
