Welcome to The Silkmen News
Covering Macclesfield FC's quest to return to the National League and beyond
Hello, and welcome to The Silkmen News - a newsletter covering Macclesfield FC’s fortunes edited by me, Ben Carey.
I hope to bring you a mix of articles throughout the 2024/25 season, from reports / reviews of the side’s home matches and as many aways as I can get my eyes on, transfer activity, tactical analysis and perspectives of the club’s progress both on and off the field.
I’ll also have an eye on the wider picture of the Northern Premier League as the season progresses, and hopefully keep tabs on how some of Macclesfield’s former players are faring at their new clubs.
A bit about me, for anyone interested: Originally from Sheffield, I’m a lifelong Sheffield United fan who moved to Macclesfield in 2005. I’ve been settled in Macc ever since, a stone’s throw away from the Leasing.com stadium. I’ve followed Macclesfield’s trials and tribulations closely over the years, becoming an adopted Silkmen fan in the process.
My interest has accelerated following the fabulous work of the two Rob’s (Smethurst and Savage), and all the amazing efforts of the hardworking staff and volunteers behind the scenes since the club was reformed in 2021.
In the past, I’ve covered Sheffield United both in print and online, and also worked in Boxing as a blogger, reporter, freelance journalist and former press officer for leading fighters Ricky Hatton and David Haye when working for boxing promoters, Fight Academy.
I’m setting up The Silkmen News more for my own enjoyment than as a money-making venture. I also want to put a disclaimer out there: I’m still relatively new to non-league football but learning all the time. I’m passionate about the grassroots scene having previously coached at Tytherington Juniors AFC.
At the heart of it all, I’m a fan who wants to bring a little more coverage to Macclesfield FC and be part of a fun journey as the club hopefully makes it back to the National League, and touch wood one day, the EFL.
And I hope this newsletter brings you along for the ride. Thanks for subscribing.
